The Six Steps

SignPost is a FREE site promotion resource that handholds you through a six-step process of registering your site with search engines and directories. As a complement to global submission services that do some of the work for you, SignPost shows you the essential things you have to do yourself whether you use a service or not. It forces you to be conscious of what's happening. Then, when you start seeing a steady stream of traffic into your site, you'll understand why and be able to repeat the experience with complete confidence!

  1. First, prepare your pages as recommended in this site and in our free report "How to Promote Your Internet Business." Pay attention to titles, descriptions and META tags (to force descriptions on some of the search engines.) Get Step 1 details.

  2. Second, prepare the basic submittal information in advance and have it ready in a word processor file to access quickly each time you register. You need the basic information for EACH site page you register. Our detailed guide will help you. Get Step 2 details.

  3. Third, register your pages with the general search engines, such as AltaVista and WebCrawler, not just because it's easy to do, but because people are more likely to use general search engines than directories to find things. Get Step 3 details.

  4. Fourth, register your pages with Yahoo, which is both a directory and a search engine. Because it's one of the best places to find things, it's popular and a must to be listed in. It's easy to find things in Yahoo but a bit tedious to register. Get Step 4 details.

  5. Fifth, register everywhere else, especially with directories related to your business. Directories take the longest to do, because there are so many and they have differing submittal requirements. Remember that some accept long descriptions. Get Step 5 details.

  6. Sixth, follow up to see if your registering activities were successful. See if your pages were indexed. Search using keywords others might use. If your pages don't consistently come up near the top, find out why, make changes and register again. Get Step 6 details.

CAUTION!!!
Successfully registering your pages is a huge undertaking, even when using one of the automated services. Do not proceed if hard work is dangerous to your health! Seriously, if you think you can simply breeze through this phase of your business promotion efforts, you've got some unpleasant surprises ahead. On the other hand, if you do this part of it right by methodically carrying out each of the six steps - and you keep on doing it - your chances of success are many times greater.
