The fifth step on the route to web success is to register everywhere else, especially with directories related to your business. Directories take the longest to do, because there are so many and they have differing submittal requirements. Remember that some accept long descriptions. Drive on for details.

General Directories
These are directories of general interest. They index just about everything. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

B Subject Directories
These are directories with a specific subject focus. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

C Regional Directories
These are directories with a specific regional focus. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

D General Malls
These are virtual malls (actually directories) of general interest. They index just about everything. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

E Subject Malls
These are virtual malls (actually directories) with a specific subject focus. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

F Regional Malls
These are virtual malls (actually directories) with a specific regional focus. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

G Announcement Sites
These are sites that specialize in announcing new sites on the Internet. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions.

H Usenet News Groups
These are ONLY the Usenet news groups where it is acceptable to announce your site - commercial or not. That's their purpose. Be prepared with your information and follow the instructions and observe the proper etiquette.

I Press Release Sites
These are sites that help you send your press releases to the appropriate news sources. If your site gets a good review by a print magazine, you'll usually see a dramatic increase in the number of visits. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions. Look at various site promotion resources for tips on writing effective press releases.

J Classified Ads Sites
These are sites where you can place classified ads for your product or service, usually for free. As with print media, classified ads appear for a limited time, so placing ads is an activity that requires constant follow-up, not only to renew ads but also to measure effectiveness. Experienced direct marketers will be comfortable here.

K Award Sites
These are sites that give awards for sites with (sometimes without) special merit. Check out their evaluation criteria. Be prepared with your information and follow their instructions. Note that having an award does not necessarily bring more visitors/buyers to your site.

L Site Promotion Services
These are sites that help automate parts of the site registration process. Some offer more services than others. All are excellent free sources of places where you can register your site. Be aware of two important things. First, you must still prepare your site pages such that they appear high on search results. Second, you will still have to do the essential follow-up to see if your site URLs got indexed. If you're prepared to spend some money, some site promotion services can help out. Remember though that it takes time to do all this. Time is money, especially if others do this work for you.

[CAUTION! sign]
[blank space] [blank space] Registering everywhere else is a time-consuming job, with perhaps fewer rewards than registering with Yahoo and the major search engines. Nevertheless, it may be important for you to be in every directory because of the product you offer. For example, if you offer Internet financial services, you would probably want to be listed everywhere. [blank space] [blank space]
